Silent Flames is the 4th book in the Dark & Silent Night series that includes a book about each of the four Maddox Brothers. Silent Flames by Cate C. Wells is about Adrian Maddox and his wife Cora. If you read Veiled Silence by Eve Black you got some glimpses of Cora as a side character but not much insight into what is really going on with her life.
If you’ve read the preview of the first chapter in the back of any of the other Dark & Silent Night books or even the blurb for this book, it will come as no surprise to you that Cora catches her husband, Adrian Maddox, in the intimate act of cheating on her. Until that moment Cora believed that she was in love with Adrian and that he loved her back so when she is thrown this curveball, she has to seriously reassess everything about her relationship. However, Cora is not a pushover and she has been through quite a lot in her own life that makes her capable of finding a way forward through trauma even if she doesn’t process it well. And oh boy does Cora definitely have a difficult time processing trauma. She is determined to find a way through if not for herself then for her babies.
At the same time Adrian finds out that the woman he took for granted as a sort of trophy wife actually matters to him a lot more than he originally thought. He will be forced to face some harsh truths about himself and his own actions. Adrian almost managed to self-sabotage himself right out of his seemingly perfect marriage.
This is a great story about how these two very broken individuals have to confront the illusion that they had of each other. And determine if they can come together to build a real relationship based on who they really are.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book but if I hadn’t I would have borrowed it from KU when it came out on Dec 27. Super happy I got the ARC as after reading that first chapter preview in Veiled Silence I really didn’t want to have to wait to find out what happened!
